Note: This is D.S. Martin considering the best way to stem the advance of the Visigoths. ‘I can do it, but will this snowball melt before reaching Alaricus, on his steed?’

(republished from a previous blog by D.S. Martin)

Why do we, humans, presume that we individually, have the solutions to the “world’s problems”?

It is the height of hubris that I should presume to have the answers to the errors of all human endeavors.

Yet, I do find myself pondering the mistakes of generals, presidents, religious leaders, prime ministers, peace activists, etc. etc. ad infinitum ad nauseum.

And it does not matter what the issue may be.
It may be socialist Marxism, or it may be free market capitalism. I could do each of these better than those who have had the reigns of power thus far.

Honestly, I will play scenarios out in my mind, concerning just about any issue, which I see as a “failed” attempt to “better” humankind.

I consider this, because I just watched a biography of Che Guevara. He certainly believed that he had the answers to human “mistakes.”
But, he could not see himself, critically, as he saw the rest of the movers on the world stage.
Is it better that a “great visionary” like Che Guevara put a bullet in so many skulls, rather than Fulgencio Batista? I doubt that those men and women, whose last moments of life, were spent looking up the barrel of Che’s gun, would feel that he was any “better” of a man than Batista.

How and why are we humans so blinded to our own failed attempts at perfection? Am I the only one who finds himself trying to “save the Titanic”, push back the barbarians from the gates of Rome, or stop the bloodbath on the streets of Baghdad? If only I had been there… If only I could tell them what they don’t understand… If only…

Why can’t I come to terms with the fact that human misery is utterly insoluble, at least so long as humans are the purported architects of the “final solution”?
Why can’t we all just get along?

God bless,

DSM

I have had to stop watching news and reading mags and papers. There is enough worrying to go around and I do not need additional people screaming extra urgent stuff into my ears. They all seem to imply that the problem on which they report or inform is the most pressing and requires my full and immediate attention even though they almost never offer any meaningful solution. Therefore ,I have sought to aquire a form of mental silence, prayerful stillness, which allows me to function in the world but not be of the world. This subtle change in my approach to aquiring knowledge and information has been a rewarding challenge. I cannot save Rome and the ship may be headed for the bottom but I can still stay involved and find peace and meaning by quietly believing on him who was sent, our Blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Author of our life.

I do appreciate the focus that you have set as your means of knowledge. I agree that the admonition for people to ‘Be still and know God and His divine sovereignty’ over all things is the way for internal peace.

News is designed to evoke fear, which is the prime weapon of the adversary. But not all secular history is in the same form as “News”, and historical knowledge does allow for Spiritual growth and trust in Him.
But, I know you well enough to know that you understand this also.
    God bless,
